The data on hormone therapy and its association with cancer is controversial.
Most of the data associating hormone therapy with cancer involves the use of synthetic estrogen and synthetic progestins. The studies involving the use of bioidentical or isomolecular (same molecule produced by the body) suggests that it is protective of cancer, and this potential concern is dynamic and continuously being evaluated.
We, as Health Care providers at AB Hormone Therapy, never recommend initiating hormone replacement therapy without thoroughly evaluating a person’s history and potential risk factors. We also extensively discuss past studies, alternatives, potential risks vs benefits with a patient before outlining potential treatment recommendations.
There have been many medical studies which have looked at cancer rates in bioidentical hormones properly administered to menopausal women. What they found was there was no increase in the rate of breast cancer at all.
One excellent study in France studied more than 80,000 women, six times more than the World Health Institute. They still found no increase in the rate of cancer compared to those who had never used any type of hormone therapy.
What they did find was these women improved their sexual function, reduced rates of several diseases and slowed the aging process.
